Rascal Flatts - What Hurts The Most |
] |
I've been neglecting this journal and most of my online activities for about three months now... pretty much since I started working full time. It's been a major shift in lifestyles, and I'm still trying to adjust to the 6:30am alarm in the morning (for which having my clock-radio report that it's 3 degrees outside does not help =P). Been thinking that I should update this journal, and I guess nothing gives me more reason than today to start.
I drive myself and my mother to the station every morning to take the train to work (pretty much because parking in the CBD is a bitch, and an expensive one at that). Mum starts at 7:30am, which means I usually get into the office around 7:50am... about 10-50 minutes earlier than I really have to be (depending on whether I have an 8am training session). I usually spend the extra time catching up with office gossip, getting an early start on the day's work, or grabbing a leisurely breakfast over the morning paper on my way in (which means I'd arrive approximately 20-25 minutes later than my normal 7:50am).
I walk out of the train station this morning and decide that I wasn't hungry or cold enough to want a hot breakfast, so I head straight to the office and get in at 7:52am. Very few people are around and I get some work done before a few colleagues arrive and we head into the kitchen to catch up on our weekends over a morning coffee as more people trickle into the office.
Approx 8:15am, the people walking into the office are wearing curious expressions, asking us if we know what the commotion is downstairs in the lobby and out the front of the building (having come in through the back). We reply that we don't know and some speculate about a traffic accident in the morning rush hour. We hear sirens heading towards our building, but no-one really takes notice of them.
At least until a few minutes later when the first reports of shots fired and a man dead make their way through the office grapevine.
I don't think anybody really believed it until the news began breaking over the major news channels/websites.
The building was locked-down immediately. We were told that no one was getting in or out of the building until further notice. Those who still hadn't made it in were told to stay away and find somewhere to wait it out, or just simply go home, when they called to find out what was going on. Those of us already in the building were urged to call family and friends to let them know we were safe.
Through the floor to ceiling windows on one side of our floor, we could see the whole scene unfolding underneath us. The sheer amount of police, fire and ambulance vehicles all converging on the one intersection right outside our building, parked haphazardly with all doors open to indicate that the officers inside had been rushing to get to the scene itself. The police helicopters circling overhead. And at the corner of the intersection was the ominous white sheet draped over a prone body.
It was apparently a situation that started in a nightclub, and ended in front of our building with a man dragging a woman out of a taxi by her hair. When two bystanders came to her aid, the first man pulled out a gun and shot all three, one fatally, before fleeing the scene. They cordoned off almost an entire corner of the CBD while armed special operations officers combed the streets for the gunman, who is yet to be caught.
Needless to say, none of us got much work done, and most went home early (after the lock-down ended at around 3:30pm) to make it out of the city before the sun set.
It was all very surreal. Not the least of which was the realisation that had I gotten the urge for breakfast this morning, I would have been walking down Flinders Lane towards that intersection, possibly even be at the intersection, at approximately the same time that the incident happened.
Would I have done something about the situation if I had seen it like those two bystanders? Said something? Called the police? I don't know, although based on past experiences, I have my suspicions as to where my instincts would lie. Could something have happened to me had I perhaps followed those instincts? The possibility, I think, is what is most unsettling.
My heart goes out to the victims of today for their courage and being prepared to offer their help to a stranger in need.

Home again~~ ^_^
Had no luck with transport this trip ^^;;; Bus from the office to the airport was late. Flight from Melbourne to Gold Coast was delayed. Flight from Gold Coast to Melbourne was delayed... after which we ended up circling around in the air for 45 mins because the storm over Melbourne made it impossible to land....... orz
Having said that, Gold Coast was gorgeous!!
We stayed at the Watermark; twin share rooms were extremely comfy (the pillow menu made us all laugh *L*). And the food~!! Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner -- it was like they never really stopped feeding us *L* Seafood buffet on the first night (those prawns~~!!! And the mussels!! *drools*). Three course sit down dinner on the last night (freshly picked mushrooms stuffed with ricotta and goat's cheese and other really good stuff + flame grilled prime cut steak in red wine sauce with potatoes + tiramisu XD). I almost shudder to think of the amount of alcohol we went through the three nights we were there ^^;;;;
Nightly walks along the beach and during our free hour before dinner. Clubbing with all the grads and the managers (who were nice enough to shout us drinks *L*). Especially the big one on Thursday night -- many, MANY "stories" came out of that one *LOL*
It was pretty much just one really big party (kinda like school camp really... only with better food, better accommodation, and pretty much better everything *L*) and networking session, interspersed with the training that I didn't have to take in much because I'm not in Audit most of us struggled to stay awake during ^^;;;
All in all a great week... but I'm happy to be home and NOT have to get up at 6:30am every morning for the weekend -- I don't think any of us got more than three or four hours of sleep a night for the last few days *L*
Anyhoo... now it's time to rest up... and be ready for that briefing bright and early Monday morning at 8:45am sharp ^^;;;

Heading up to Gold Coast tomorrow morning... for more training ^^;;;
Over the course of this year, I'm apparently scheduled for a total of 192 training hours O.O;;; But then, considering that in the past five days I've been at work, I've already gone through 32 of those hours, it probably isn't as much as it currently sounds *L*
In any case, looking forward to the warm water and proper beaches \(^o^)/
Doubt we'll have time to get out there during the day, but then I prefer walking along the beach in the surf at night anyway ^_^ Will be doing lots of that to work off all the food they intend on feeding us ^^;;; *L*

... but lots of things have happened. Moved house. Car accident -- again, not my fault (let's not get into my track record =P). Taking dad's car to be fixed... which involved two weeks of multiple trips to the dealers coz they just couldn't seem to fix a coolant leak properly =P And finishing up at (part-time) work...
Survived my first day at full-time work as a grad today *waves flag* Can't say it was any more or less than I expected. - People at work are really nice -- which is good.
- They "meeting-ed" us to death today -- which was bad.
- We got brand new laptops and are going up to the Gold Coast for training next week -- which is good.
- I have departmental training already scheduled for 8am this Friday -- which is bad.
*L* All in all, I'm just hoping tomorrow won't be as tedious as today... I don't think I'd be half as drained as I am if I didn't have to listen to the partners and managers talk about the firm's values for 2+hrs without being able to do anything (... and had access to that cup of coffee I was desperately craving at about 4pm) ^^;;;

So far, the only things I've managed to sort out into (10 heavy-ass) boxes are my textbooks, old uni coursework (coz I'm a pack-rat and I keep stuff like that =P) and about 80% of my manga/artbooks -- i.e. about two drawers + one and a half shelves of my bookshelf...... orz
And so what remains is... everything else *dies* My mountains of DVDs and CDs... craploads of anime merchandise... my tower of gundam boxes... a whole bunch of dictionaries/reference books... and the list goes on......
After which will come the fun of pulling all my posters off the wall...
All in all, it's going to be an exhausting few days from now onwards... *cringe*

Well well, doesn't this look familiar...? *L* I find it kind of astounding that this will actually be the fourth "first post of the year" I'll be writing in this journal... time was that I couldn't keep up a journal for more than three months ^^;;;
'06 will be remembered for a great many things... and unfortunately, most of the "major" events weren't exactly pleasant... =P
But, as they say, that was the year that was... and since it hasn't managed to kill me quite yet, I'd like to think I'm just a bit stronger for the whole ordeal ^^v - My last year as an undergraduate~!! -- While I inevitably have quite a few more years of postgrad studying to do, I'm glad I finally have that piece of paper that says I'm qualified to actually start learning how to do my job *L* Oh the irony...
- Getting a grad position I'm happy with -- After the nightmare that was grad recruitment, being able to say that is a big relief ^_^
- Mum being diagnosed and treated for thyroid cancer -- the "event" that almost derailed my mid-year exams =P But Mum's recovering nicely so I'll simply be thankful that we both made it through okay.
- Fourth car crash (and actually my fault this time =P) -- the second "event" that almost derailed my mid-year exams... and $5500 worth of damage which teaches me NOT to attempt driving when I'm feeling "not all here" due to a combination of too little sleep + too much stress + too much caffeine.
- My grandfather passing away -- the "event" that almost derailed my end-of-year exams (are we seeing a pattern here?? ^^;;). I think what made this suck even more was that it happened five days after I'd booked end of year plane tickets to go and see him... So going from being really excited that I could call and tell him an actual date when I would land, to being told that he'd died was... not nice.
- Family politics -- because that sucks no matter when it happens... but even more so after a death in the family... doubly so when it takes place over long-distance phone conversations... and triply so when I'm just about to enter exam territory =P
- Manifest 2006 -- from which I walked away with more money than when I went, thanks to a fortuitous little shipping mishap from Amazon Japan, said Amazon's excellent refund/return policy, and the masses of Death Note fans present this year ^_^ Also love to my fellow Team Hokage members as always~!! Four years in a row!! *sends hugs*
- Spending my birthday in Shanghai -- for the first time in fifteen years ^^;;;
- Japan 2006 -- and because I'm too lazy to recount the adventures that this title entails, please refer to previous entry *LOL*
- Preparing to move house -- i.e. the reason I've been aching all over for the last week or so =P
- And the loads and loads of things I managed to acquire over the year -- I should actually tally how much I funnelled into Amazon Japan alone this year ^^;;; the figure promises to be scary... especially when considered in conjunction with what I actually spent in Japan *L*
It's been quite a year... and while a lot of it sucked for the most part, I'm glad that there were people (*hugs to all my friends*) and simple pleasures (*love for Bleach and Host Club*) to keep me sane and see me through ^_^ Also glad that the last seven weeks or so of the year ended on a more positive note.
And thus, it comes time to put away my gorgeous Bleach 2006 calendar, break out my equally drool-worthy Bleach 2007 calendar (marking the first time since I started buying manga calendars that I've had two consecutive years from the same series *LOL*) and wish everyone a safe and happy 2007~!!

After five weeks away, it's good to be home ^_^
Shanghai was a blast. Catching up with my cousins was great fun. As was the shopping and the food.... oh the food..... XD
Spent the last two weeks in Japan... the first week of which was spent traipsing around the Kansai region. So the list of cities/prefectures for this trip goes like this: Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Yokohama & Tokyo... i.e. there were a LOT of trains involved *LOL* Unfortunately, the problem with being in so many cities in so few days is that you begin to forget exactly which restaurant was in which city ^^;;;

Headed out on a road trip with my relatives to Suzhou today... The newly developed area is really nice... very open and green and clean -- three things that Shanghai is distinctively NOT ^^;;
Made a stop off at Nanyang on the way there to have the original Xiao Long Bao *drool* Gluttony is something I am happily participating in on this trip *LOL*
Before we got there though, we took a bit of a detour around (the outside of) Shanghai's F1 track. It was closed off since it wasn't race season, so barring a few glimpses of the track itself, it wasn't exactly an exciting experience.
Having said that... the detour didn't end up being a total loss.
We were on our way out when we caught sight of a few people "throwing" two of these things around in an empty parking lot ^^;;;

( More photos )
The mechanics people were really nice and let us take a few photos posing next to the cars as well *L* It's probably the closest I'll get to a Ferrari outside a showroom for a long time... if ever ^^;;;
I'm not a rev-head by any stretch of imagination -- I merely appreciate cars... some more than others *L* But the sound of those V8/V12 engines as they were revving around that parking lot... ^________________^ So very, very drool-worthy *L*

So... today marks the first birthday I've spent in the place of my birth in 15 years ^^;; And if there's one thing you can say about Shanghai, it's a city that does everything to extremes =P There is very little middle ground. It's also a city that's all about the food O_O;;; I've done very little except eat since I got here Tuesday night...
For those looking for a fun restaurant in Shanghai, I highly recommend Banana Leaf -- especially if you like Thai, and it's your birthday *LOL* The food is divine, the service is excellent, and the atmosphere is the most fun I've had in a restaurant in ages ^_^ The waiters/entertainers all sing in various languages (I got two renditions of happy birthday plus a song of my choice ^^;;)... and as they're doing that, they walk around asking people to get up and dance with them ^^;;; They even give you a cake, take your photo and print it out in a personalised birthday card if it's your birthday ^_^
I've got two more weeks in Shanghai after this... which should be filled with shopping and fun and, of course, more eating... and then it's off to Japan~~!! ^_^ Looking very forward to everything... except trying to cart all my material acquisitions back home in my suitcase ^^;;;

Randomly... and in brief... - Manifest 2006 -- Glad it came and went before last Tuesday... But it was a good weekend ^_^ Nail-biting finish in the Trivia competition, but Team Hokage reigns once more for the fourth year in a row~!! *love to all my Hokage-team members as always* That (near-invsibly) damaged copy of Blanc et Noir that's been lying around my room for the last few months also went to a good home at the auction for $125... O_O;; I still think that's insane but hey, I'm not complaining since it means that I actually left Manifest with more money than I went with ^^;;;
- Ouran Koukou Host Club -- My weekly dose of crack is gone~~~ TT^TT But oh what a finish~!! *L* Enough TamaHaru implications to appease my inner OTP fangirl, and yet still leaves open the possibilities for that soft spot I have for HikaHaru. Rarely has there been an anime (lately) that has garnered this much love from me for every single episode. This will undoubtedly join Fruits Basket as one of the only two series that I keep close at hand for instant laughter + warm-fuzzies.
- From Gunota -- MG Strike Freedom is set to come out in December. It will be priced at 4800 yen.
WTF!?! This will be the THIRD version of Freedom they've released in MG format!! Don't get me wrong, I love vanilla!Freedom... but why does Justice get no MG love!??!?!! I want an MG Justice dammit!! Preferably IJ, but I'm going to be picky as long as I get ONE MG Justice!! One!! Is that too much to ask!?!? *kicks Bandai*
- The Sakurai Incident -- Since I'm doing IP this semester, this news was interesting to me both academically and as a seiyuu-fan. It's very clear that the truth of the matter (exactly who plagiarised/altered the script) will never come to light. Given this, attributing blame for the plagiarism itself to Sakurai or anyone else will result in nothing but a pointless hypothetical debate. However, the fact of the matter remains that the error was not picked up in the production process as it should have been... and unfortunately, someone will have to take the fall.
A lot of people have mentioned that it's unfair to judge Sakurai when none of us have all the facts. Maybe I'm jaded, but it's my opinion that while you may be "innocent until proven guilty" in the eyes of the law, the opposite is true for the black marks on your reputation and moral character. That's why in so many professions not only must one be actually unbiased and of good moral character, it's equally important that they also maintain the appearance of being unbiased and of good moral character =P
In a society as wrapped up in honour and "saving-face" as Japan, especially in Japan's entertainment industry, Sakurai's "punishment" couldn't be considered anything more than what is necessary. And when you add in the fact that this matter was clearly settled outside the boundaries of formal proceedings, the punishment must also be something that Sakurai and/or his management company consider better than the alternative.
As for the lasting effects it could have on his career, I think it's safe to say that realistically, it will be exceedingly difficult, if not almost impossible, for Sakurai to climb back up to the peak he has just fallen off. Only time will tell...

Although since I've had longer exam periods the last few semesters, I haven't actually totally disappeared for quite a while *L*
End of year trip is organised (FINALLY!! ^^;;) I think we drove our travel agent absolutely nuts, but at least I will end up visiting family (one member of which I want to see, other members of which I'm not so ecstatic about =P) before high season kicks in. Japan trip is also set for Dec 3 to 18. Hotels have been organised in Tokyo and Osaka... Rail Passes will be purchased soon, as will tickets to the Ghibli Museum... Expect to be away for 5 weeks from November 14. Which means I'll be home for Xmas and the fun-fun process of moving house ^^;;
Translations of the Edge are done for acealliance, pending editing and clean up. Yay!
Manifest happens this weekend! Double yay!
Mum looks to be finally recovering from her radioactive iodine treatment from last week. Triple yay! ^_^
Remaining things to take care of before/during/after exams: - Pay for airfares ^^;;
- Decide whether I want an engraved/non-engraved iPod... *L*
- Contest that stupid parking fine that was a result of the Alfred's inefficiency last week *growls*
- Getting a visa for China -- I find this inherently stupid =P I was born there and yet I need to apply and pay for a visa in order to gain entry =_=+
- Remember to apply for graduation before I leave -- Heh... ^^v
And probably a million other things that I can't remember right now... *L* But for the moment, my advanced tax law lecture beckons ^^;;;

Lisa - Tears |

The increasing amount of people selling stuff on LJ is all well and good... I'm well aware that most of these are people who are just legitimately looking to get rid of some things in their collection. There are, however, some people who you can just tell are using LJ as some kind of substitute for ebay. Which is fine (barring the fact that it probably violates LJ's TOS somewhere along the line). Caveat emptor -- let the buy beware, and all that jazz...
But this is just getting ridiculous...
I can appreciate that some fans will pay megabucks for what is unavailable in their country. That's why some merchandise, and especially Animate-exclusive goods, can retail outside Japan for approx two to three times their equivalent value... and you have to take into account duties/taxes/shipping expenses when retailers import the merchandise.
However, no amount of duties/taxes/shipping expenses will convince me that a Gundam Seed Destiny poster that retails for ¥368 after consumption-tax in Japan (~$4-$5 AUD) deserves an 800% markup to $45 AUD when retailed online.
And to advertise them as any kind of "RARE", let alone "VERY RARE", is an absolute joke when you consider that they would have originally been made available for all the stores in the entire Animate chain... all 75 of them =P
I have similar posters from the Gundam Seed range that was released December of 2003. One of which I picked up in Tokyo in November 2004 -- i.e. a whole 11 months after its initial release... and after hitting only two Animate stores (Akihabara + Ikebukuro).
If people are aware of the reality of situation and still choose to pay the advertised amount, I say more power to them -- because they obviously believe that the item is somehow worth that much if not more. If people aren't aware though... then situations like this emphasise the need for consumer protection regimes, especially in relation to descriptions like "rare" given that it's a comparative term.
In the absence of such regimes, which is inevitable in personal dealings over LJ, then the only principle that applies is caveat emptor... and while it may be true that being burned once is more effective than any kind of protectionist regime... it still annoys me... =P

Gundam Seed Destiny Special Edition II --
There's a rational part of me that wonders why I'd bother watching this thing when I pretty much know what's going to happen in it =P The other part is sucker enough to be curious about what was added/changed/etc. that it really doesn't care *L* And then, of course, the overriding fangirl just wants to hear Ishida Akira's voice ^^v
In any case, minimal changes were made (as far as my memory of the original episodes can tell). Athrun sounded slightly calmer in that exchange with Kira/Cagalli/Miriallia at Crete. They also cut out Athrun's original parting comment to Cagalli that half of me winced at, but the other half understood all too well *L* Exchanging Athrun for Luna in the Shinn rescue thing had basically no impact on plot whatsoever, except to perhaps lend a bit more credibility to the Shinn/Luna thing... whether they succeeded is probably moot =P Oh, and Miri on the bridge during Cagalli's abduction... again, very little to no impact on the storyline, they probably just figured they'd recycle footage A instead of footage B *LOL*
Of the added scenes, I have so say that I found the Kira and Lacus stuff to be adorable *grins* And Kira seated cross-legged on the bed, hunched over fixing Pink-chan as Lacus looks on is very very cute ^_^
Ending theme is gorgeous. Ending sequence is fairly standard... nothing to really write home about... except maybe Athrun's hair extensions ^^;;;
I have to say though, that the first two shots -- Athrun/Cagalli, Kira/Lacus and the "items of significance" that appeared with them -- amused me to no end *snickers*
Cagalli: I gave him a necklace. Athrun: I gave her a ring. Lacus: I gave him a gundam. *they look towards Kira* Kira: <.<... >.>... I... *sheepish smile*....... nothing... Moral of the story: Lacus is the only one who gives practical gifts, and Kira is cheap *LOL*
As a total aside, I noticed that a few of Asucaga fans have latched onto the ending sequence... I was totally prepared to melt at it as well, until a little part of my brain said to me: "You know... you can't see it clearly, but judging by the size and shape of the thing, that could very well be the ring that's disintegrating in Athrun's hand and trickling away through his fingers..." *LOL* And strangely enough, I think I actually like it more for that tiny possibility.
Confirmation would be good, but I suspect that's not forthcoming until the DVD gets released and we get a clearer view of the shot. Until then, it's something to speculate about ^^v
